The FBI is reporting a new trend or criminal activity against Chinese Americans. According to Special Agent Dean Phillips, there have been a number of threatening phone calls to primarily Chinese business owners. The phone calls are coming in and threatening bodily harm to them or their family members unless they fulfill some monetary demands that range from 10,000 to 30,000 dollars.
Mr. Phillips said in regard to where the calls are coming from that it seems that the calls are being made through Voiceover Internet Protocol and the calls would be actually originating from China.
The FBI believes that the calls are being made by an organized crime organization rooted at an unknown chinese location. The FBI started hearing about the calls in early to mid-April and it was mostly on the West Coast. The FBI is encouraging victims to call their field offices around the country or file a report at www.IC3.gov.
